Cultural Detective provides a framework in which to understand and interpret behaviours and attitudes from other cultures acknowledging positive intent, and building bridges to prevent breakdown in relationships. This is such positive and practical training. It is also clear on individual difference—works against stereotyping. I like the emphasis on understanding ourselves as amalgams of diverse personal and cultural influences. This approach can be useful in one-on-one coaching situations, and tremendously powerful in organisations.

I recently integrated Cultural Detective into a week-long a course at a French university. The materials were easy to use and stimulated incredibly rich conversations among the students. The most brilliant aspect of the program, from my perspective, is the deceptively simple Cultural Detective Worksheet. After seeing the rich solutions generated by the students when they analyzed the CD Critical Incidents, I suggested that they use the same worksheet for the intercultural analyses required in their final group projects. They did and the results were excellent—clear, simple, and sophisticated, with solid recommendations for building cultural bridges. I look forward to integrating the Cultural Detective into many of my courses and training programs in the future.

Culture is a useful lens to discuss a variety of issues. The overall framework and premises of Cultural Detective are excellent! It helps open people up to other perspectives because they have no reason to feel threatened.

I purchased this resource immediately prior to hosting a high-level Thai delegation here at the University of Auckland. There were collaboration and business opportunities to explore with this group.
